September 2013 – Commonplace Beauty: Opening Night in Review

Since late 2012 and throughout 2013 to date many of you have been on this journey with me as I prepared for my first solo exhibition.

A great deal of work went in over the months to produce numerous art pieces, fine tune my style, reflect on my artist statement and create an opening people wouldn’t forget…

“Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it” – Confucius

Do we perceive beauty in the commonplace? We have developed a culture in which, through familiarity, we take for granted the value and beauty in life’s most basic offerings. There is beauty in the commonplace, for those that dare take the time to observe and appreciate it.

“Do not blame the thistle that you see no beauty” –  Johnathan Lockwood Huie

I’m intrigued by what is – but rarely noticed. By remaining highly sensitive to the subtleties of light and shadow, I create intimate reflections of everyday life, objects and people. Finding beauty in the common place is important to me as a form of reflection, appreciation and gratitude… And that in itself… gratitude is one of life’s greatest healers. They often say “When you look outside, you dream. When you look within, you awaken”. My art is a voice motivating you and me to do both.

And finally, last week Friday September 20th, 2013, all of that came together!

In total I had some 20+ pieces on exhibit (pastel and charcoal) at the Bermuda Society of Arts. In conjunction with the artwork, I had sets of notecards available for purchase and an exhibition catalogue.

Some great conversations and dialogue took place with the many attending, but time flew by so fast and I wish I could have talked longer with each person. My friends estimate that some 200+ people passed through the gallery that night. The amount of support and the turnout was amazing! I must give a huge THANK-YOU to everyone that has supported and encouraged me on this journey. It was an awesome opening and I’m still on a high. My soul is well pleased.

My hope was that the exhibition increased my exposure and made my name more recognizable in the art community. Most importantly, I hope  my work to found some connection with everyone’s hearts, and inspire them to find beauty in the commonplace. Throughout the conversations I had, I believe this message was communicated and valued.

For those that could not attend, you still can view the exhibit and purchase artwork!

The exhibit will continue on at The Bermuda Society of Arts until October 8th.
The gallery is open every weekday from 10am-4pm and on Saturday from 10am – 2pm.

Embrace and discover the value of art!

I have posted a few photos below from the exhibition. You can see more exhibition photos here: 2013 Solo Exhibition – Commonplace Beauty
